The new feature from Warwick Thornton, the award-winning director of Samson and Delilah, has garnered critical acclaim and prizes at Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and Best Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Set in the Northern Territory in 1929, Sweet Country combines all the elements of the western genre; the frontier, conquest of a people, and haunting landscapes. A new settler, drunken war veteran Harry (Ewan Leslie) borrows an Aboriginal worker and his cheeky young sidekick from a neighbouring station. The kid escapes to Black Hill station, where the Aboriginal head stockman (Hamilton Morris) and his pregnant wife are looking after the property while their devout boss (Sam Neill) is in town. The beautiful yet brutal landscape of central Australia is fitting backdrop to the tragedy that unfolds. This powerful work features a top cast including Bryan Brown as local police chief, Matt Day as the judge, and Thomas M. Wright (Top of the Lake).
